Surovy receives Featured Alumni recognition

12/5/2012 —

Ann Marie Yurish-Surovy '99, has been named as the 2012-2013 recipient of Penn State Lehigh Valley's Featured Alumni recognition. This recently established recognition honors outstanding Penn State alumni who have shown exceptional presence in the Lehigh Valley. Nominations are accepted each year and the recipient is chosen by a committee of Penn State Lehigh Valley Advisory Board Members.

Surovy began her Penn State career at the Lehigh Valley campus where she became actively involved in numerous campus activities. After two years, she transitioned to University Park's College of Communications where she completed a bachelor of arts degree in 1999.

Surovy is currently Director of Development for LifePath, a local nonprofit organization headquartered in Bethlehem that provides programs and services to individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities. Among other things, this position allows her to fulfill a self-proclaimed passion for advocating for disability rights. She also dedicates time toward supporting women's and children's issues, as well as causes that benefit cancer research. Additionally, she volunteers her time as the vice president of marketing for the Women’s Business Council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce and is active with the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce’s Women of Whitehall group.

Surovy was nominated for the Featured Alumni recognition by her former professor, Nichola Gutgold, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at the Lehigh Valley campus. Gutgold celebrates Surovy's transition from Penn State Lehigh Valley honors student to Penn State Lehigh Valley spokesperson. In her nomination, Gutgold shared, "She is an outstanding Penn State ambassador, a compassionate leader and ethical communicator. She has represented the College of Communications numerous times at open houses…[and is] held in the utmost regard in the community."

As the 2012-2013 Featured Alum, Surovy will engage with students, faculty, and fellow alumni and share her Penn State and professional experiences throughout the academic year. Her term as the campus ambassador will culminate in May when she is recognized at the 2012 Honors Convocation and Commencement.
