Enrollment opens for continuing education classes

Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education is currently accepting enrollments in the following courses:

 

Conflict Management

Date(s): March 2, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Description: In this course, the attendees will learn the sources of conflict and how to deal first hand with conflict.  Conflict resolution styles will be presented and several case studies will be used to allow the attendees to apply the skills learned. A Penn State Certificate and 0.4 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $79/person

 

Emotional Intelligence

Date(s): March 4, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Description: The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) will be presented in this course.  The attendees will have an opportunity to identify their predominant EQ style using an assessment instrument and work through activities to see how that style influences their responses to individuals. A Penn State Certificate and 0.4 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $128.95/person

 

Delivering Effective Presentations

Date(s): March 4 and 11, 2010

Time: 6-8 p.m.

Description: Learn the skills of effective speaking including preparation, organization, style, and body language. Learn how to concentrate on your message, build rapport with your audience and become more confident and comfortable in public speaking situations. A Penn State Certificate and 0.4 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $79/person

 

Grammar Boot Camp for Professionals

Date(s): March 9 and March 16, 2010

Time: 6-8 p.m. on March 9 and 6-9 p.m. on March 16

Description: Learning objectives for this course include an understanding of the tools for identifying and correcting common usage, grammar, and spelling mistakes, an understanding of proofreading techniques, and a series of tips for polishing overall professional communication. A Penn State Certificate and 0.5 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $109.76/person—includes a paperback copy of "Business Grammar, Style & Usage:  The Most Used Desk Reference for Articulate and Polished Business Writing and Speaking by Executives Worldwide."

 

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Date(s): March 11, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Description: In this hands-on training course attendees learn proven techniques and processes for thoroughly analyzing problems and arriving at sound, workable solutions quickly and confidently. A Penn State Certificate and 0.6 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $124/person

 

Law and the Workplace: Understanding Employee Relations Law

Date(s): March 16, 23, and 30; April 6, 2010

Time: Choose 9 a.m.-noon or 5-8 p.m.

Description: For managers and supervisors, the course is a survey of the major employment laws governing the workplace from the advent of labor legislation in the U.S. to the recent ADAAA, and will focus on the information exempt personnel need to be aware of and/or understand from a practical perspective in order to be legally compliant and keep their employers out of legal trouble. A Penn State Certificate and 1.2 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Critical Thinking

Date(s): March 18, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Description: This course will introduce the attendees to critical thinking and informal logic and how this helps managers develop the ability to reason clearly and critically and apply problem-solving techniques.   Emphasis is placed on the identification and management of the perception process, use of assumptions, emotional influences, and language in various forms of business communication. A Penn State Certificate and 0.6 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $119/person

 

Resume and Cover Letter Writing

Date(s): March 23 or April 20, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Description: This course walks participants step-by-step through the creation of the most common sections found on résumés in today's job market. In addition to helping determine what information should be included, it also goes a step further to identify pitfalls to avoid when creating this powerful, job-searching tool. A Penn State Certificate and 0.4 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $79/person for class only; $159/person for class and a one-on-one resume review with the instructor.

 

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility

Date(s): March 25 or May 12, 2010

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Description: This course provides a foundational perspective for socially responsible management practices in business. Special emphasis is placed on the inter-related nature of ethics, moral, legal, and social issues in managing individuals, groups, and the organization within a business environment. A Penn State Certificate and 0.6 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $119/person

 

Preventing Harassment in the Workplace

Date(s): March 31, 2010

Time: 1-4 p.m.

Description: All employees throughout the United States are legally entitled to enjoy a workplace free of harassment, discrimination and intimidation.  This supervisory training will explore the different types of harassment and the violation of personal rights underlying all forms. A Penn State Certificate and 0.3 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $59/person

 

Essentials of Communicating with Tact and Finesse

Date(s): March 31

Time: 9 a.m.-noon

Description: This interactive session teaches a common foundation of insight into the basic guidelines to effective communication, and will give participants hands on examples of how to enhance their communication skills. A Penn State Certificate and 0.3 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements.

Fee: $59/person

 

Lean and Six Sigma

Date(s): Wednesdays, March 31-May 5, 2010

Time: 6-9 p.m.

Description: This program is designed for individuals from all levels of an organization with a focus on continuous improvement. The goal is to expose the student to the tools and methodologies that can immediately be implemented to reduce waste and cost, improve processes and quality, increase efficiency, and add customer value. A Penn State Certificate and 1.8 CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements. 

Fee: $495/person; $450/person for multiple enrollments from same organization.
