Runner's World editor to speak about enterprising media

Charles Butler, deputy editor of Runner's World magazine, will speak about "The Perfect Marriage: When the best of old and new media work together, enterprising journalism can (and does) happen," at 1 p.m., October 7 in room 135 at the campus in Center Valley. The event, sponsored by State of the Valley student newspaper, is free and open to the public.


"It seems of late that a day doesn’t pass when we don’t hear another story about the doomed fortunes of print journalism. Indeed, 2009 has not been a resounding year for many newspapers and magazines, with the closings of such dailies as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Rocky Mountain News and the folding of Portfolio, Best Life, Vibe and other magazines," says Butler. "The death of these publications is disturbing for many reasons: the jobs that are lost, the editorial voices that are silenced, and the heightened concern that the American public is losing sources of information that are necessary to sustain an educated and enlightened citizenry."


In his talk, Butler will offer reflections on how journalism, in the face of many doomsday prognostications, is showing that it can recast itself in a changing world and to a changing audience. He suggests that, despite severe challenges the media profession must endure and overcome, the journalists and media companies that remain committed to the principles of factually-verifiable reporting, stylish storytelling, and engaging presentation (whether in print or digitally) will not only keep and grow their audience share but also produce reputable journalism that may exceed the quality of its predecessor.


Charles Butler has served as deputy editor of Rodale Inc.'s Runner's World magazine since 2004. He also teaches courses at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, and New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies in New York City. Prior to his current position, he worked for a number of publications including Smart Money, Sales and Marketing Management, and Sports Travel. In addition, Butler has freelanced for publications such as The New York Times, BusinessWeek, Fortune, Men's Journal, and Good Housekeeping. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University in New York City.
