Gallery Exhibit Celebrates Women's History Month with Profiles of Tennis Greats

2/11/2009 —

In celebration of March as Women's History Month, Penn State Lehigh Valley will host an exhibit, featuring photos and memorabilia of some of the greatest women in tennis history, from March 2-31, 2009 in the Concourse Gallery at the Lehigh Valley campus.  The images and information that will be on display are excerpts from a new book, "Women Tennis Stars: Biographies and Records of Champions, 1800s to Today," (McFarland 2009) by Dennis J. Phillips.

"The book covers the careers of 35 champions who made significant contributions to the sport both on and off the court," says Phillips, who is associate librarian and tennis coach at Penn State Lehigh Valley.  "I'm excited to share with the community a selection of the photos of these remarkable tennis players during a month that celebrates the achievements of all women."

A number of the photos used in the book were donated by the estate of acclaimed tennis photographer Carol Newsom, who also holds the distinction of being the first female granted a press pass to Centre Court at Wimbledon.  Sadly, Newsom passed away in 2003 from breast cancer.  Moved by the generosity of her estate in providing the photos, Phillips will donate the royalties from the sale of the book to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.  The Concourse Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
