Volunteer Opportunities for New Board Members



Every new Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society board member is requested to meet certain minimum standards to volunteer in the activities of the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society listed below.

• Participation in Meetings / Conference Calls / Events: we ask that each new board member participate in the meetings, conference calls and events planned by the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society wherever possible. Your participation in the dialogue and discussion is necessary for the successful engagement of our alumni which is key to the continued success of the institution.

The volunteer opportunities listed below are the most common programs available to alumni. If you would like to discuss other ideas not listed below, please feel free to contact the alumni relations office at 610.285.5064.

  • Alumni in Admissions Volunteer: the admissions staff at Penn State Lehigh Valley requests the assistance of select alumni society volunteers to share their Penn State experience, career accomplishments and field information based on major and current employed position in the Lehigh Valley. The admissions team hosts Offer Programs each spring semester in an effort to recruit students offered admission to Penn State Lehigh Valley other recruitment efforts. The admissions office provides all necessary materials and training.
  • Annual Giving Volunteer: annual giving volunteers work with the development officers to help identify fellow alumni and match opportunities to support Penn State Lehigh Valley philanthropically. The volunteer will also meet with the development director prior to each alumni event and review event registration list for giving opportunities.
  • Class Correspondent: the alumni relations office strives to maintain connections with alumni from different class years. The class correspondents help increase attendance at events by contacting their classmates to increase their interest in attending the events of interest, perhaps by coordinating a class reunion.
  • Student/Alumni Correspondent: The Student/Alumni Correspondent helps to bridge the gap between students and alumni by planning student/alumni interactive events such as: Senior Send Off, Blue & White Weekend, City Lights and much more. The correspondent will work directly with Blue & White Society (student organization of the Penn State Alumni Association) and its student executive board on developing programs and recruiting members of the Blue & White Society to attend Society monthly meetings and events.
  • Alumni Career Education (Mentor): the career & internship services and alumni relations professionals are recruiting alumni at a significant point in their career to be a mentor, host a job site visit, job shadow opportunity or assist in developing internship possibilities for current students.
  • Committees of the Board Members: the board members of the Society are supported by several committees with different focus points. The primary focus points are divided into three categories: membership, marketing, and the engagement of alumni in events.
  • Fundraising Committee: volunteers working in this division with the board members will form a fundraising committee to support all Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society fundraisers, such as: Penn State Creamery Ice Cream Sale, Basket Bingo and Casino Night that benefitting the Society’s First-Year Scholarship Fund and THON.
  • Society Ambassador Committee: some individuals will enjoy representing the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society as a diverse group of individuals from across the class years, campuses, academic programs, social backgrounds, activities backgrounds and geographic locations. The Society Ambassador Committee will consist of volunteers that meet as a formal body up to four times per year to assist alumni relations in implementing retention programs to engage alumni in monthly alumni events. Each member serves as an ambassador to the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society and participates in each monthly alumni event to obtain feedback on current and future programs to advance the Society. The committee will develop talking points for new event attendees as a Society welcome and will plan an annual dinner for all board members.
  • THON Committee: Do you want to make a difference in the lives of children? Do you want to be a part of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world? Do you want to play an active role in ensuring the success of THON? If so, then join local area alumni and support Penn State Lehigh Valley students on the THON committee. Committee members play a key role in helping THON fulfill its mission of conquering pediatric cancer. As a committee member, you can expect to plan for and attend THON events, be a part of a team that is dedicated to making THON happen, and have a great time! Committee member support is crucial to THON’s success.
  • Diversity Committee: The Diversity sub-committee provides information to the Society and about various climates and diversity topics. Specifically disseminating and scheduling a variety of awareness programs that alumni may attend. They will seek ways to enhance knowledge, understanding, and application of diversity related issues in the local community, University and Society. Individual committee members begin by exploring their own diversity related narratives, beliefs, and experiences in the context of other members in order to build a Committee-wide base for addressing diversity within the community. Each fall, the Committee requests self-nominations for membership from students and community members, though membership is not required to attend any of the Committee meetings.
